Eliza R. Snow

Although she died more than 120 years ago, celebrated Mormon poet Eliza R. Snow continues to capture the heart of Mormon believers. Born in Massachusetts in 1805, she joined the church in 1835 and moved to Kirtland, Ohio. Eliza was devoted to the gospel and used her literary talent to teach, testify and record important events. The poems reproduced here are from her first published book, Poems: Religious, Political, Historical, printed in 1856.

In this poem, beloved Mormon poet Eliza R. Snow encouraged the downtrodden saints of her day to lift up their hearts and rejoice in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Her message of hope and courage likewise calls to us as we face the modern battles of today.
Though deep'ning trials throng your way,
Press on, press on, ye Saints of God!
Ere long the resurrection day
Will spread its light and truth abroad.
Though outward ills await us here,
The time at longest is not long
Ere Jesus Christ will re-appear,
Surrounded by a glorious throng.
Lift up your hearts in praise to God--
Let your rejoicings never cease;
Though tribulations rage abroad,
Christ says, "In me ye shall have peace."
What though your rights have been assail'd?
What though by foes we've been depoil'd?
Jehovah's promise has not fail'd--
Jehovah's purpose is not foil'd.
His work is moving on apace,
And great events are rolling forth;
The kingdom of the latter-days--
The "little stone," must fill the earth.
Though Satan rage, 'tis all in vain--
The words of the ancient Prophets spoke,
Sure as the throne of God remain,
Nor men nor devils can revoke.
All glory to His holy name,
Who sends His faithful servants forth
To prove the nations--to proclaim
Salvation's tidings through the earth.
Though deep'ning trials throng your way,
Press on, press on, ye Saints of God!
Ere long the resurrection day
Will spread its light and truth abroad.
Though outward ills await us here,
The time at longest is not long
Ere Jesus Christ will re-appear,
Surrounded by a glorious throng.
Lift up your hearts in praise to God--
Let your rejoicings never cease;
Though tribulations rage abroad,
Christ says, "In me ye shall have peace."
What though your rights have been assail'd?
What though by foes we've been depoil'd?
Jehovah's promise has not fail'd--
Jehovah's purpose is not foil'd.
His work is moving on apace,
And great events are rolling forth;
The kingdom of the latter-days--
The "little stone," must fill the earth.
Though Satan rage, 'tis all in vain--
The words of the ancient Prophets spoke,
Sure as the throne of God remain,
Nor men nor devils can revoke.
All glory to His holy name,
Who sends His faithful servants forth
To prove the nations--to proclaim
Salvation's tidings through the earth.

When I think about what the early Mormons suffered, I am even more touched by this poem. Yes, we live in trying times. Yes, the economy is difficult. Yes, we are surrounded by a wave of filth and wickedness. But, if the early saints were able to endure and be happy in spite of their challenges, so can we! Be not discouraged, choose to be happy!
